Two teenagers are in custody after a violent assault left three men injured at a bus stop in Earlville, Cairns, early on Wednesday morning. The incident underscores persistent safety concerns across the region's public transport infrastructure.
According to Queensland Police, the violence unfolded just before 6.20am at a bus stop at a Mulgrave Road shopping centre. An 18-year-old man and 17-year-old boy initially targeted a 58-year-old Earlville resident, who sustained minor injuries that did not require medical attention.
Within minutes, the same pair allegedly attacked a 24-year-old Edmonton man at the same location. During this assault, the victim was wounded in the chest and robbed of personal property. The situation escalated when a 69-year-old man attempted to intervene and help the injured younger victim. He was assaulted in turn, suffering a significant head injury.

Police provided first aid at the scene before paramedics transported both injured men to Cairns Hospital in stable condition. The two suspects were apprehended nearby. One was taken into custody at a property on Mestrez Street around 8.45am, roughly a 10-minute walk from the bus stop. The second suspect was arrested shortly after at the intersection of Sunflower and Mestrez Street.
Local residents expressed alarm at the violence. One woman told media the incident was deeply concerning, noting she lived in the area. A long-time Cairns resident said safety around shopping centres was deteriorating. "You watch the shopping centres get more unsafe," he said. "It's getting worse."

The incident reflects broader crime trends across Cairns. Recent statistics show Earlville is among the suburbs flagged for higher-than-average crime rates, with property-related incidents and occasional public disturbances reported in areas with high foot traffic and busy road corridors. Cairns as a whole has faced climbing crime figures; according to Queensland Government data, the city recorded 7,353 offences against the person in 2023-24 alone, alongside 18,524 property offences during the same period.
A crime scene remains in place around the shopping centre and nearby streets as police investigations continue. Authorities are urging anyone with information or relevant footage to come forward to Queensland Police.
