  • FIFA Heroes launches 28 April as a fast-paced 5v5 arcade game rather than a traditional football simulator
  • Players can assemble teams mixing real football icons, fictional characters like Thor, and World Cup 2026 mascots
  • The game comes free on mobile with pre-installation on select Motorola devices, later arriving on PlayStation, Xbox and Switch
  • FIFA's move follows its 2022 split from EA Sports over licensing fees, enabling the organisation to pursue its own gaming strategy

FIFA Heroes arrives 28 April, the first new title released since FIFA and EA Sports ended their partnership in 2022. Rather than chasing EA's simulation-focused approach through EA Sports FC, FIFA has opted for something entirely different. The game features 90-second matches in a 5v5 format, with nonstop action replacing the slow build-up of traditional football.

The roster defies convention. The arcade title will pitch some of today's greatest footballers against mythological creatures, the official FIFA World Cup mascots and legendary players from the past. The three iconic mascots for the 2026 World Cup host nations will be available: Maple for Canada, Zayu for Mexico and Clutch for the United States. Alongside contemporary stars like Harry Kane and Lautaro Martinez, players can field Diego Maradona, the Argentine legend who died in 2020.

Mythological player characters include Thor, the Norse god of thunder and lightning, and Sun Wukong, the Monkey King from Chinese mythology, known for his somersault moves and super-human strength. Every Hero on the team has special abilities, from teleport dribbles to blasting flaming power shots and using magnetic tackles to steal the ball.

Motorola announced that most new devices would come with the game pre-downloaded, with custom gameplay designed for the latest Razr fold as well as exclusive rewards for Motorola users including currency, emotes and players. The game is coming to a wide array of platforms, including Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation and Xbox in 2026. The game is free to play.

FIFA's independence marks a significant strategic shift. In October 2022, FIFA confirmed it would no longer grant an exclusive licence to EA Sports after the two failed to reach an agreement over licensing fees, instead announcing plans to create a "new gaming model" and "work with a range of third-party studios and publishers". Solace partnered with leading NYC game studio Enver to publish and develop FIFA Heroes. Founded in 2021 and based in New York City, Enver is a media-first gaming company creating culture-shaping worlds.

The financial dispute that led to the split cannot be overlooked. EA Sports had paid annual licensing fees to FIFA to use its name since 1993. When FIFA sought significantly higher fees for future World Cup cycles, EA decided rebranding to EA Sports FC offered greater creative freedom and financial sense. FIFA's move into direct game development represents an attempt to monetise gaming independently while reaching audiences beyond traditional simulation enthusiasts.

FIFA stated it aims to offer the love of football to a new generation while rekindling nostalgia and fun for families and older players who've grown up with FIFA, positioning FIFA Heroes as fitting seamlessly into its digital football portfolio under the FIFAe umbrella. The 2026 World Cup timing positions the game as a marketing vehicle for the tournament itself, arriving just months before the competition in North America.

Whether audiences embrace an arcade alternative to traditional football simulations remains uncertain. The formula deliberately trades realism for speed and spectacle, targeting mobile gamers and casual players rather than the hardcore simulation audience. Early success will depend on whether FIFA can build a lasting competitive community around what is fundamentally a different type of football gaming experience.
