Bernthal co-wrote the special alongside Reinaldo Marcus Green, who also directed, marking the actor's first producing writing credit. As the first Marvel Cinematic Universe special in four years, the production will reportedly be the longest special yet, clocking in at 60 minutes.
The creative partnership runs deep. Bernthal and Green previously collaborated on the 2022 miniseries We Own This City. Their shared vision centres on delivering an uncompromised version of the character. Bernthal has stated: "It's going to be dark. It will not be Punisher-lite, I promise you that."
Marvel's marketing and production team invested heavily in the special's tone. Brad Winderbaum, the head of Marvel Television, told outlets the special is "like a shotgun blast of a story, but also has all the pathos and emotion that you want out of a Frank Castle story." The actor worked with Marine Raider consultant Nick Koumalatsos to bring authentic military precision to Frank's methodology.
Plot details remain sparse, though production hints suggest the story will confront Frank's past. Set filming included a building exterior with signs for Gnucci's Family Restaurant, believed to be a reference to Ma Gnucci and the Gnucci crime family. Created by writer Garth Ennis and artist Steve Dillon, Ma Gnucci is the ruthless leader of the Gnucci Crime Family, a criminal organisation that first appeared in the series premiere of The Punisher.
The timing serves multiple narrative purposes. The special arrives ahead of Daredevil: Born Again season 2's debut, in which, as far as is known, Frank will not appear. Bernthal's absence from the Daredevil season and his presence in the special suggests the one-hour presentation functions as narrative connective tissue. MCU fans will be getting a double dose of Bernthal's Frank Castle this year, as the vigilante is also set to appear this summer in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Bernthal originally starred as Frank Castle in Season 2 of Netflix's Daredevil series in 2016, where he faced off against Charlie Cox's blind vigilante and later teamed up with him.
