Nicholas Brendon, who starred as Xander Harris on the WB teen drama Buffy the Vampire Slayer, died on March 20. He was 54.

Brendon passed in his sleep of natural causes, his family announced Friday. The family described him as passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create.

For most viewers, Brendon will always be Xander Harris: the loyal sidekick without superpowers, the geek whose ordinariness became his greatest strength. Across all seven seasons, Brendon portrayed Xander and appeared in all but one of the show's 144 episodes. Xander Harris was, not unlike Adam Brody's Seth Cohen on The O.C., a character that helped shift the portrayal of the nerd in American popular culture.

Speaking with journalists in 2017 on the series' 20th anniversary, Brendon recalled typical fan interactions: "Man, you got me laid a lot in high school. You made it cool to be a nerd and awkward and funny." He wondered aloud how many babies existed because Xander had got people laid.

Born in 1971 in Los Angeles as Nicholas Brendon Schultz, he originally wanted to become a professional baseball player before pursuing acting in an effort to manage his stutter, a disorder he'd later champion as a spokesperson for the Stuttering Foundation of America.

His Buffy castmates paid immediate tribute. Alyson Hannigan, who played Willow, wrote on Instagram: "My Sweet Nicky, thank you for years of laughter, love and Dodgers. I will think of you every time I see a rocking chair. I love you. RIP."

Sarah Michelle Gellar quoted one of Xander's iconic lines on Instagram: "They'll never know how tough it is to be the one who isn't chosen. To live so near to the spotlight, and never step in it. But I know. I see more than anybody realizes, because nobody's watching me." She added: "I saw you Nicky. I know you are at peace, in that big rocking chair in the sky."

James Marsters, who played vampire Spike, wrote: "I'm sad hearing the news of Nick's passing. He was a brilliantly talented actor, and it was a joy to work with him on a show that was a high point in both of our lives."

Brendon shared in 2023 that he had a congenital heart defect and had suffered a heart attack, and he also underwent spinal surgeries related to cauda equina syndrome. Starting in his 30s, Brendon suffered public struggles with substance abuse and mental illness. He faced multiple arrests on charges including felony vandalism, resisting arrest, and felony corporal injury to a spouse, the latter ending in a plea deal that included three years' probation.

Yet his family's statement emphasised his resilience. While Nicholas had struggles in the past, he was on medications and treatment to manage his diagnosis and was optimistic about the future at the time of his passing. In recent years Brendon found his passion in painting and art, and loved to share his enthusiastic talent with his family, friends and fans.

He remained active within the Buffy fan community, regularly attending comic and science fiction conventions, and contributed to the development of Xander's character in the franchise's follow-up comic books, receiving writing credits on several issues.
