Detectives with Melbourne's Moonee Valley Crime Investigation Unit are appealing for public help after an unidentified man was found unresponsive in the Maribyrnong River just off Canning Street in Avondale Heights on Saturday 14 February about 11am.

After making extensive enquiries into the identity of the man, detectives are now appealing to the public for information. The man remains unidentified despite investigative efforts, and police hope that releasing details about his distinctive physical features and belongings might spark recognition from the community.

Physical description and clothing

The man is described as Caucasian in appearance, between 21 and 50 years old, with dark hair and facial hair. He was wearing a dark shirt with 'BARBER' insignia, a studded belt, black jeans, black socks and a silver necklace.

His distinctive tattoos are likely to be crucial in establishing his identity. He has a 'Mr Horsepower' tattoo and 'Mum 1964 - 2006' on his right forearm and an outline of black flames around his left forearm. Tattoos of this kind often carry personal significance and may help family members or those close to the deceased recognise him.

Investigation appeal

Investigators have released CCTV and a digitally generated image of the man to assist with their enquiries. The release of visual materials is a standard tool in unidentified remains cases, allowing police to reach a wider audience than traditional investigative methods alone.

Anyone who believes they recognise the man or who has information about him is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au. Victoria Police emphasises that all information provided to Crime Stoppers is treated in confidence.
