Jim Carrey is coming back to the Sonic universe. A teaser trailer released this week confirms the Hollywood legend will reprise his role as Dr. Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 4, settling speculation about whether he would continue with the franchise after hinting at retirement.
The brief teaser, centred on the Chaos Emeralds, features Carrey's voice delivering an ominous warning: "You think your world is safe, but your time is about to run out. The chaos has only just begun." Within the emeralds, glimpses of the film's cast emerge, confirming the return of Keanu Reeves as Shadow and the addition of Kristen Bell as Amy Rose. Ben Schwartz reprises his role as Sonic, with Idris Elba returning as Knuckles and Colleen O'Shaughnessey as Tails.
Carrey's involvement is significant given his statements in 2022 about stepping back from acting. "I'm retiring," he said at the time. "It depends. If the angels bring some sort of script that's written in gold ink that says to me that it's going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road, but I'm taking a break." He emphasised his preference for a quieter life, painting, and his spiritual pursuits.
Yet Carrey has been candid about what brought him back for this sequel. After returning for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, he explained: "I came back to this universe because, first of all, I get to play a genius, which is a bit of a stretch. And, you know, it's just… I bought a lot of stuff and I need the money, frankly."
The film's plot appears to navigate around Carrey's character's apparent sacrifice at the end of Sonic 3. Rumours suggest Sonic 4 will partly take place in an alternate timeline where Robotnik conquered the world, which would explain how his character can simultaneously be alive and still serve as an antagonist despite his redemptive arc in the previous film. Amy, played by Bell, is supposedly from this parallel universe.
The cast expands beyond the core heroes. Ben Kingsley, Nick Offerman, Richard Ayoade, and Matt Berry have signed on in roles yet to be disclosed. The film arrives on 19 March 2027. A spinoff film is also in development for 2028, with speculation among fans that it will centre on Shadow the Hedgehog.
