Google is bringing Personal Intelligence to free users in the Gemini app, Chrome, and AI Mode, completing its move from a premium feature to one available to all eligible users in the United States. Personal Intelligence taps into Google apps including Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Google Photos, YouTube, Search, Maps, and other services to provide responses that are uniquely relevant to the user, retrieving details about preferences from text, photos, and videos to customise answers. The practical effect is striking. Users can troubleshoot technical issues even without remembering the exact product they own, with Gemini referencing purchase receipts to provide debugging steps tailored to their specific device model.
For many users, this feels genuinely helpful rather than generic. The immediate benefit is AI that actually feels helpful rather than generic. Yet the feature also represents a fundamental shift in how consumer AI operates: it requires giving an AI system privileged access to your digital life in exchange for more useful responses.
Google has structured the feature around user control. Users have to explicitly opt-in to personalisation and can disable certain apps.
