Emergency services were called about 9.15am Monday to reports of a man's body located off the Henty Highway near Finlayson Road in Jung, in Victoria's western district. The man, believed to be approximately 60 years old, has not yet been formally identified. The cause of death is yet to be determined but is being treated as suspicious.
Hours later, the incident took a sharper turn. Police were notified of a man behaving erratically on Firebrace Street in Horsham around 8.30pm on Monday evening. Horsham sits roughly 300 kilometres northwest of Melbourne, about two hours' drive north of the initial discovery site.
Officers negotiated with the man who was armed with a knife before he was arrested about 11pm. The 49-year-old Minyip man was transported to hospital. The tactical response, police said, was necessary given the man's behaviour and the weapon he was carrying.
The investigation remains ongoing. Homicide Squad detectives are expected to interview the 49-year-old Minyip man at a later stage. Specialists have been deployed to the location.
