  • Nine cast members including Noomi Rapace and Sean Harris have joined Netflix's live-action Assassin's Creed adaptation
  • Emmy-winning director Johan Renck, known for HBO's Chernobyl, will direct the series
  • Filming is underway in Italy with production expected to last seven months through October 2026
  • The series marks the first live-action project from Netflix and Ubisoft's 2020 partnership

Netflix has announced a live-action adaptation of Assassin's Creed, the beloved franchise launched in 2007 by French video game publisher Ubisoft. After years of development, the project is now moving at pace, with casting announcements arriving in rapid succession and a prestigious director attached to steer the vision.

Noomi Rapace, Ramzy Bedia, Sean Harris and Corrado Invernizzi are the latest to join the cast, following Lola Petticrew, Toby Wallace, Zachary Hart, Laura Marcus, and Tanzyn Crawford. So far, no specific character roles have been revealed, with both Netflix and Ubisoft keeping plot details tightly secured.

The series is centred on the secret war between two shadowy factions – one set on determining mankind's future through control and manipulation, while the other fights to preserve free will. The series will follow its characters across pivotal historical events as the two factions battle to shape humanity's destiny.

Swedish filmmaker Johan Renck, best known for directing HBO's Chernobyl, for which he won an Emmy, has been tapped to helm the show. Renck's television credits include directing episodes of Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, Vikings, Bates Motel and Halt and Catch Fire, and he previously worked with Netflix on the 2015 series Bloodline and last year's film Spaceman.

The appointment signals Netflix's ambition to treat the Assassin's Creed adaptation as premium drama rather than a straightforward action spectacle. Renck's track record suggests the series will prioritise atmosphere and character complexity alongside the historical intrigue that defines the franchise.

Emmy nominees Roberto Patino and David Wiener serve as creators, showrunners, and executive producers. Both have substantial credentials: Patino created the HBO Max miniseries DMZ and contributed to Westworld and Sons of Anarchy, whilst Wiener served as showrunner on season two of Halo and previously wrote for Homecoming and The Killing.

Filming related to the Assassin's Creed series was already underway in the Camaldoli area of Italy as of March 5, 2026. Filming is scheduled to last for seven months before ending by October 16, 2026. Italy serves both as a production location and as part of the on-screen setting, tying the series to the historical roots of the franchise.

The live-action adaptation is the first series to be developed under Netflix's agreement with Ubisoft for Assassin's Creed, a partnership announced in 2020 that has expanded to include animated and anime adaptations as well. The video game series itself continues to thrive commercially; the most recent entry, Assassin's Creed Shadows, was released in 2025, with more than 230 million copies sold overall.

For context, a 2016 film adaptation starring Michael Fassbender was released, earning strong box office returns but receiving mixed reviews for its approach to balancing historical sequences with modern-day narrative threads. The television format may allow for the deeper character development and world-building that the franchise's lore demands, particularly given the emphasis on prestige production values evident in Renck's involvement.
