Apple unveiled the AirPods Max 2, the long-awaited successor to its premium headphones that launched in 2020. From Singapore, the announcement signals a crucial midpoint correction in Apple's over-ear headphone strategy, though questions remain about whether the company has finally matched the value proposition offered by Sony and Bose.
The Max 2 cost $549, and feature active noise cancellation, Apple's audio-specific H2 chip, support for live translation, better sound quality, and more. In the U.S., AirPods Max 2 have the same $549 price as the previous AirPods Max, which Apple is no longer selling. The headphones will be available for pre-order starting March 25, in midnight, starlight, orange, purple, and blue colors, and will be available early next month.
The core upgrade centres on a processor swap that should have happened years ago. Apple's director of Audio Product Marketing said: "With the incredible performance of H2, AirPods Max are upgraded with up to 1.5x more effective ANC for the ultimate all-day listening experience." Apple says the new headphones' active noise cancellation (ANC) is up to 1.5x more effective than their predecessor. That improvement addresses a persistent weakness relative to the Sony WH-1000XM series, which has dominated the Asian premium headphone market.
Beyond noise cancellation, features like Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, Voice Isolation, and Live Translation come to AirPods Max for the first time. Live Translation comes to the AirPods Max 2 as well, a feature that uses your AirPods and iPhone to translate incoming speech to and from the language of your choosing. For business travellers across Asia's polyglot markets, this AI-powered translation capability represents a genuine differentiator that neither Sony nor Bose can currently match.
Apple says the AirPods Max 2 has a new, high-dynamic-range amplifier for cleaner audio, and Spatial Audio is said to be better, with improved localization of instruments, better bass response, and natural mids and highs. Apple advertises up to 20 hours of battery life on a single charge with active noise cancellation enabled, which is unchanged compared to the previous generation.
The sceptic's view: While AirPods Max 2 is a welcome update, it's hard not to wish these were released in 2024, if not sooner. The inclusion of the H2 chip only catches them up to the 3-year-old AirPods Pro 2, and does little to correct the flaws in the original model. And based on the frequency of updates, this model could be on shelves until 2030. The headphones maintain their notoriously heavy weight and complex form factor that has limited appeal to consumers accustomed to the more portable alternatives from Japanese and South Korean manufacturers.
For Australian importers and regional resellers, the question is whether the live translation and improved ANC justify the $549 ask in a market where AirPods Max 2 still cost $549, notably more than most of the competition. Despite the high price, the first AirPods Max did sound exceptional — they've just been hard to recommend for years because of the aging feature set and cost. The new capabilities may finally shift that calculus for business-focused buyers and content creators, even if casual consumers continue to gravitate toward cheaper alternatives.
The Airpods Max 2 will be available in more than 30 countries and regions, though Apple has not yet disclosed region-specific pricing for Australia. Local pricing typically sits above the US dollar equivalent when converted to AUD.
