Carrington Park in Bathurst played host to a heavyweight clash as the Panthers and Sharks looked to continue their hot start to the season, and the Panthers put on a masterclass in controlled attack from the opening minute.
Look, when Penrith gets rolling early like this, it's a sight to behold. That slick attacking set in the seventh minute saw Brian To'o score in the corner as Penrith broke through first, and from that moment, the Sharks spent most of their energy scrambling to hold back the tide.
The real story of the first half, though, was how Cronulla kept shooting themselves in the foot. Cronulla fought desperately to stay in the contest throughout the opening 20 minutes but conceded a crucial penalty late in the half when the Sharks had Penrith pinned inside their own 20-metre zone. That moment proved costly. Nathan Cleary scooped up a loose ball to cross under the sticks in the final play of the half, extending Penrith's advantage to 18 points and leaving the visitors with no way back into the game.
Here's the thing about this Panthers outfit: Penrith's defence has been exceptional throughout the opening 40, with Ivan Cleary's men yet to concede a point this season. That's a frightening statistic when you're facing a team that's meant to test the premiership contenders. Braydon Trindall, a western NSW product, and Bathurst junior Will Kennedy were outstanding in the Sharks' win over the Titans, yet neither could find the attacking rhythm that served them so well in Round 1.
The Bathurst venue always presents a puzzle for Penrith, mind you. Bathurst has not always been a happy hunting ground for the Panthers, with Ivan Cleary's men hitting rock bottom at Carrington Park last season when they suffered a 25-6 loss to Newcastle. But this performance suggested those Bathurst demons had been exorcised, at least for now. Penrith's early season form is a reminder of the talent and discipline that carried them to four consecutive premierships. If they can maintain this level of defensive intensity and clinical execution, the rest of the comp should be very worried indeed.
