A 56-year-old Longreach man has been arrested after Australian Federal Police traced antisemitic threats on Telegram back to his account, with officers executing a search warrant on his vehicle and house on 12 March 2026.
The AFP began investigating the series of online antisemitic comments and threats toward the Jewish community posted on Telegram in September 2025. Officers seized two flick knives, an extendable baton and electronic devices during the search, which will be subject to forensic examination.
The man will appear before Longreach Magistrates Court on 14 April 2026 facing one count of using a carriage service to menace, harass or cause offence contrary to the Criminal Code. He is also facing charges relating to the unlawful possession of weapons.
The arrest comes as AFP Commissioner Krissy Barrett announced the establishment of National Security Investigations teams in October 2025 to target groups and individuals causing high levels of harm to Australia's social cohesion, including those threatening the Jewish community.
Part of a broader crackdown
Australia has seen a marked increase in antisemitic incidents and online threats in recent years. Since Operation Avalite was established, the AFP has received 124 reports, with 102 under investigation. The dedicated task force was launched in December 2024 following the firebombing of the Adass Israel Synagogue in Melbourne.
The AFP stated it is committed to identifying and charging individuals suspected of harassing, menacing or threatening the Jewish community, noting there is no place for hate or violence in the Australian community and urging anyone with information about possible threats to come forward.
Members of the public with information about threats to community safety can contact the National Security Hotline on 1800 123 400. In emergencies, residents should contact Triple Zero (000).
