Two international tourists have died after their vehicle became submerged in Queensland floodwaters. The 26-year-old man and 23-year-old woman were travelling in a Silver Subaru Forrester from Brisbane to North Burnett when they encountered dangerous flood conditions in the region.

The silver vehicle was located at Kilkivan Tansey Road, near McArthur Road after emergency services launched a search across the flooded Kilkivan to Mundubbera area. The search involved police, SES and helicopters in the Kilkivan to Mundubbera area.

The tragedy highlights the severe risks posed by driving through floodwaters in Queensland. The pair were attempting to reach their workplace in the North Burnett region when they drove into the flooded zone. Officials have repeatedly warned drivers never to attempt crossing floodwaters, as water depths are often impossible to judge and currents can sweep vehicles away with devastating speed.

The incident occurred as Queensland faced widespread flooding across multiple communities. Police issued an emergency declaration further southwest at Chinchilla on the Western Downs after floodwaters inundated another community. At least 10 businesses were under water at Chinchilla, with the community northwest of Brisbane next in line after Bundaberg was flooded, inundating hundreds of houses and businesses.

Queensland authorities continue to remind the public of the dangers of flooded roads. The saying "if it's flooded, forget it" remains critical safety guidance during severe weather events. Water of even modest depth can become lethal to vehicles and occupants when moving at speed or when unexpected currents are encountered.
