Jonah Pezet delivered a statement performance on Thursday night that went far beyond securing Parramatta's 40-32 victory over Brisbane. At Suncorp Stadium, the 22-year-old halfback orchestrated an eight-point boilover against the reigning premiers, offering Brisbane fans a sharp reminder of what the club will soon acquire.
The Broncos began with authority. Brisbane crossed twice in the first 10 minutes and led 20-6 after 26 minutes. Reece Walsh carved through the Eels defence, and the home crowd sensed a statement victory was building. Yet the game would turn entirely on Pezet's playmaking precision and composure.
Pezet's role was instructive. The Eels' excellent efforts across the spine came on the back of a destructive performance from stand-in second rower Kelma Tuilagi and excellent efforts from Mitch Moses, Jonah Pezet and Isaiah Iongi. His short passing game set up two tries for Tuilagi on the edge, whilst his grubber kicks proved impossible for Brisbane to contain.
The Eels capitalised on the Broncos being unable to handle a series of Jonah Pezet grubber kicks, leading to tries that sealed the win. One particularly clean piece of execution saw him plant a pin-point grubber through traffic that hooker Ryley Smith collected unopposed. Another forced Reece Walsh into an error in the second half, gifting Isaiah Iongi an easy walk-in. Late in the contest, Pezet was knocked to ground initially, but still had time to jump to his feet and ground the bouncing ball for the sealing try.
The broader defensive picture told a damning story for Brisbane. The Broncos looked on song early, crossing twice in the first 10 minutes and leading 20-6 after 26 minutes, but let the Eels back in the contest with errors and penalties. Ezra Mam and Gehamat Shibasaki combined for nine costly missed tackles. The left-edge defence, in particular, became a liability; Brisbane's interior defence completed just two tackles in their own 20-metre line during the first half.
The match carried significant timing. Broncos captain Adam Reynolds has confirmed that he will retire at the end of the season, announcing at Brisbane's 2026 season launch that this year would be his 15th and last in the NRL. On Thursday, Reynolds left the field clutching a rib after a heavy collision.
Pezet will arrive in Brisbane from 2027 under a three-year deal. The Brisbane Broncos have confirmed Pezet has signed a three-year contract to become the club's new halfback in 2027, 2028 and 2029, where he will take over from Adam Reynolds. His path to Red Hill passes through Parramatta for 2026. The move comes after Pezet activated a get-out clause in his contract at the Melbourne Storm, despite having previously signed with the Victorian club for the years ahead. The Storm's decision to re-sign Jahrome Hughes saw him head for the exit gates.
For now, the evidence from Suncorp Stadium is unmistakable. Whether Pezet can sustain this standard as a genuine halfback—rather than as a utility playmaker partnering Mitchell Moses—will define his 2026 season. Yet his composure under pressure, tactical intelligence, and willingness to back himself when it mattered suggest the Broncos' investment has been sound.
The Eels came back from 14-points down to win a game which saw four players bag doubles and a loss which leaves the defending premiers 0-2 to start their Premiership defence. Brisbane, meanwhile, faces urgent questions about discipline and defensive systems. Coach Michael Maguire will have little time to waste before next week's fixture.
