More than 1.3 million students were supposed to begin sitting the 2026 NAPLAN tests in schools across Australia from Wednesday, but the first day descended into chaos when a widespread technical outage brought NAPLAN testing to a sudden stop across many public and private schools.
The failure struck without warning. Students were scheduled to sit the writing component of the annual assessment online when reports began flooding in that the platform had become inaccessible. At a North Sydney school, Year 9 students were forced to abandon their tests mid-session and escorted from exam halls after the assessment platform crashed. Some students had managed to log in and access questions before the system failed entirely.
An Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority spokesperson said the issue was widespread, affecting students trying to log in to the online test portal. "This issue is being urgently investigated by our technology provider, Education Services Australia, who run the platform. Schools have been advised to pause testing while this is being investigated."
The scope of the failure raises serious questions about the reliability of Australia's largest annual education assessment. Around 50 percent of schools expected to conduct the annual benchmarking exams online this year, up from 15 percent last year; a dramatic increase in reliance on a platform that has now stumbled twice in two years. For students preparing to sit their assessments later in the nine-day testing window, uncertainty about whether they will actually get to complete their examinations has replaced careful preparation.
This is not an isolated incident. "ACARA has had months and months to fix the widespread issues from last year, but this year things are even worse," said Correna Haythorpe, federal president of the Australian Education Union, which has been calling for the online component to be abandoned entirely. The union argues that the rollout of the online component had been "hasty and ill-conceived".
ACARA maintains protocols to ensure no student is disadvantaged. According to the National Assessment Program website, all responses are automatically saved to the system, allowing students to complete their tests on replacement devices or in rescheduled sessions. For students mid-test when the system failed, this offers some reassurance, but it does nothing to address the broader trust issue. When a system designed to measure educational standards fails at its fundamental task, it becomes difficult to defend the data it produces.
The government has invested heavily in digital assessment infrastructure. The Assessment Platform can deliver assessments for over 1 million students across 10,000 schools simultaneously for NAPLAN Online. The theoretical capability clearly exists. The question now is why it is not working reliably when it matters most.
For teachers and principals, the disruption adds another layer of complexity to an already pressured testing period. For parents waiting for results to track their child's progress, it raises questions about whether this year's data will be valid. And for students who spent weeks preparing, the experience is frustrating at best and demoralising at worst.
ACARA faces a narrow window to identify what went wrong, fix it, and restore enough confidence for schools to resume testing. Given the platform's track record, that will take more than assurances that all responses have been saved. The technical capacity to deliver a national assessment platform clearly exists; the execution is what remains in doubt.
