Resident Evil Requiem has become a phenomenon for Capcom. According to reporting from multiple gaming outlets, the game has already shifted 5 million copies and surpassed the player counts of both Resident Evil 4 Remake and Resident Evil Village on Steam, making it the franchise's fastest-selling entry to date.
Now the developer is making the most of that success. Game director Koshi Nakanishi confirmed in a video message to fans on March 10 that a major story expansion is in development, alongside smaller content updates rolling out over the coming months.
"We are planning to make extra story content," Nakanishi said in the message. "In this story, we will delve deeper into the world of Requiem. We're hard at work on it now. It will take some time, so we ask for your patience and hope you'll look forward to it."
The expansion follows Capcom's pattern with recent mainline entries. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard received post-launch expansions centring on Chris Redfield and Joe Baker, while Resident Evil Village added Shadows of Rose, which explored the story through the perspective of Rosemary Winters. Requiem's expansion will likely follow a similar model, though Capcom has offered no details about which characters might take the spotlight or what threads it will pull from the game's narrative.
Fans have already begun speculating about the possibilities. Could the expansion feature Ada Wong or Claire Redfield? Will it answer the running question about Leon S. Kennedy's romantic situation? Nakanishi's video message included a cheeky joke about a Leon romance spin-off game, suggesting the developer is aware of the discourse surrounding the protagonist's personal life.
Before the expansion arrives, players can expect other additions. A photo mode is coming to the game soon, and a mini-game is set to launch in May. The mini-game announcement has sparked its own speculation among fans, with many expecting it to be the latest version of Mercenaries mode, the series' wave-based combat challenge that lets players tackle familiar environments with a broader roster of characters.
Capcom is also working on improving Resident Evil Requiem's PC performance, with a recent patch addressing several technical issues. The game's rapid commercial success and critical reception have justified the developer's commitment to long-term support, positioning Requiem as one of the studio's most successful horror releases in recent memory.
