Nintendo has announced that Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is coming to Switch 2 on 21 May 2026 in a surprise reveal that sidesteps the usual Mario Day fanfare. Rather than celebrating the 40th anniversary of Super Mario Bros with fresh Mario content, Nintendo instead confirmed the release date for its latest Yoshi adventure through the Nintendo Today app.

The reveal included footage showing how players will interact with this peculiar world. The game will feature Yoshi helping a strange, flying, talking book named Mister Encyclopedia fill in the pages of his book. The mechanics lean into discovery rather than traditional platforming challenges; creatures spit out bubbles, which can then be hopped into to rise up into hard-to-reach places.
What sets the game apart is its emphasis on experimentation. Creatures will interact with different pieces of fruit to change their effects, which is more experimentation than expected from a Yoshi game. Players can ride inside the bubbles and carry the creatures to create more, offering varied approaches to exploration and puzzle-solving.

The research element adds depth to the formula. Creatures can be named once research is completed, with players able to record their discoveries in the book. Continuing this cycle will increase the number of explorable chapters, providing progression through the storybook world.
The art style has been inspired by claymation, departing from previous Yoshi games but maintaining the series' charm. It will be the ninth main installment in the Yoshi series, following Yoshi's Crafted World from 2019.
The May release fits Nintendo's packed spring schedule. Pokemon Pokopia launched on 5 March, followed by Super Mario Bros Wonder: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition on 26 March, with Yoshi arriving two months later to round out the season. Later this year, Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave is also planned for Switch 2, continuing Nintendo's first-party push for its new console.
