In a country where democracies face unprecedented pressure from authoritarian governments and hostile state actors, cybersecurity remains stubbornly elitist. Ordinary people, oppressed communities, and small organisations have few practical tools to defend their digital freedom. The technical expertise exists. The software exists. What is missing is accessibility.
This disconnect matters more than it might seem. As cybersecurity expert Jake Braun has argued, building what he calls a "Digital Arsenal of Democracy" requires more than idealism. It requires tools so practical and simple that communities under pressure can actually use them to communicate securely, preserve their history, and organise beyond the reach of government censorship. Mesh networks, for instance, can restore connectivity when a despot shuts down internet access. But only if enough people know how to deploy them, and only if the process doesn't require a Masters degree in computer science.
The core problem sits with the security tools currently available to ordinary users. Kali Linux is universally recognised as a powerful environment for learning and deploying cybersecurity skills. In expert hands, its tools handle network configuration and traffic analysis with precision. But Kali demands expertise. It demands time. It demands the kind of focused, structured learning that few people outside the security profession can access. And it remains dangerous in the wrong hands—an untrained user poking at network packets may trigger alerts that expose them to exactly the authorities they are trying to evade.
This is where convenience becomes a security multiplier, not a luxury. Throughout computing history, convenience has been transformative. Compilers made programming accessible beyond machine language. Graphical user interfaces opened computers to non-specialists. The web itself democratised information access. Each innovation expanded the constituency of users and amplified human capability beyond what expertise alone could achieve. Security needs the same treatment.
Consider the practical reality. There are no community cybersecurity experts available at affordable cost to secure a family network. There is no pathway to create them. The expertise is expensive, the training is fragmented, and the tools remain arcane. This leaves too much power in the wrong hands. For people living under surveillance regimes or threatened by cybercriminals, self-defence should be a right but it is currently a privilege reserved for those who can afford specialists or possess technical backgrounds.
The solution is not to expect every person to become an ethical hacker. Rather, it is to bundle complex security concepts into practical applications that non-specialists can deploy. Protection against IoT exploits, for instance, does not require most users to understand deep packet analysis. It could be built and packaged so that someone with basic technical competence can deploy it on naive users' systems. Shared intelligence about safe device behaviour, communicated openly between communities, could create whitelists that detect genuine threats without requiring individual expertise.
The objection is predictable. Convenience can create its own risks. Simplified tools in unskilled hands might create false confidence or introduce new vulnerabilities. But research increasingly shows that inaccessible security actually increases risk. When tools are too complex to use correctly, people either abandon them or work around them in insecure ways. Designers who ignore accessibility lose their security posture to usability fatigue and human error.
There are genuine complexities here. Security that is both simple and safe, especially when deployed by non-experts in hostile environments, requires careful design. It demands what hackers do best: seeing systems differently, testing assumptions, and building things that make difficult problems feel inevitable rather than impossible. This cannot be outsourced to corporate vendors treating security as a feature add-on. It requires the kind of creative scepticism and community commitment that the hacker ethos has always embodied.
The question is not whether hackers have the technical capacity to democratise security. They do. The question is whether the cybersecurity community will prioritise it as a matter of principle, not just profit. For communities under actual threat of state surveillance or authoritarian control, for democracies under pressure, and for ordinary people trying to protect their privacy and rights, that distinction matters profoundly.
