  • Shinji Mikami established Unbound Games in May 2023 after departing from Tango Gameworks under Microsoft and Bethesda.
  • The studio is developing an original AAA title using Unreal Engine 5 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
  • Unbound currently has around 50 employees with plans to expand to approximately 150 developers.
  • Legendary producer Masato Kimura, who worked with Mikami on Devil May Cry and Resident Evil, is involved in the venture.

Shinji Mikami's new studio, Unbound Games, is developing an original IP for consoles and PC, according to the studio's official website. The website has been live for about a year but has only just come to attention, listing Mikami as its representative director and indicating the studio has been in business since May 2023.

Unbound describes itself as a fully independent company developing high-end consumer games and creating original AAA titles, with current workforce of around 50 employees and plans to expand to approximately 150 developers.Job listings reveal the studio is working on a high-end original IP powered by Unreal Engine 5 for PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.

The move comes after Mikami's departure fromTango Gameworks, the studio behind The Evil Within, Ghostwire: Tokyo, and Hi-Fi Rush, in 2023.Masato Kimura, the producer of Ghostwire: Tokyo and Hi-Fi Rush, is among those working at Unbound, and has previously worked with Mikami on Devil May Cry, Resident Evil, and PN.03.

According to Kimura in an interview with the company, the studio aims for AAA quality and AA content, creating a title that offers a rich gaming experience and allows complete immersion in its world. The approach reflectsthe challenge of developing high-end AAA titles in Japan without the hundreds of billions of yen and hundreds of people working for five to seven years typical of overseas projects.

Mikami revealed during an interview in April 2024 that he had wanted to leave Tango Gameworks for a while before finally deciding to do so in 2023, but stuck around due to responsibilities related to then-ongoing projects. The decision to leave stemmed from a desire to provide more opportunities for young talent and to explore new creative avenues.

Mikami got his start at Capcom working on games like Goof Troop before assuming the director's chair for 1996's Resident Evil, and went on to work on a number of major titles such as Devil May Cry, Dino Crisis, and Resident Evil 4 before developing God Hand (Clover Studios), Vanquish (Platinum Games), and The Evil Within (Tango Gameworks).

Unbound's team is comprised of individuals who have worked on a number of major franchises, including Hi-Fi Rush, Resident Evil, Shadow of the Colossus, and Silent Hill.
