A man has faced Melbourne Magistrates Court charged with murder after a shooting in a suburban street. James Slater, 31, came before the court on Monday charged with one count of murder.

Emergency services were called to a man with critical injuries at an intersection in Strathtulloh, in Melbourne's west, on Thursday. The 36-year-old victim died at the scene.

According to initial reports, an argument occurred before gunfire erupted. It is believed that the shooting involved three men: the deceased, a 63-year-old man, and a third individual who remains unidentified.Police said two men, the victim and a 63-year-old, were at the intersection before a fight broke out with a third male and several shots were fired.

Slater allegedly left the scene but was arrested on Sunday almost 95km away in Skye, in Melbourne's outer southeast. The distance between Strathtulloh and Skye underscores how far the accused reportedly travelled before being apprehended.

Slater was not required to speak during the short hearing. Magistrate Steven Raleigh was told Slater was a First Nations person but there were no other custody management issues.

No other information was given during the brief session and there was no application for bail. Slater was remanded in custody and will return to court on July 27.
