The Season of Slaughter arrives 11 March at 10 a.m. PST, granting you the power to transform into the Butcher, a force only partially under your control. For three decades, this cleaver-wielding menace has terrorised Diablo players by appearing without warning and dismantling unsuspecting heroes in seconds. Now Blizzard is flipping the script, and the demon becomes the player.
This isn't just window dressing. The main feature of the season will be the Butcher transformation mechanic. Players will be able to take the form of this monster and use its unique abilities such as attacks, dashes, and a hook that can pull enemies towards them. You'll have multiple ways to access the Butcher form. There will be a few different ways to embody the Butcher in Diablo 4's new season, starting with the seasonal questline, A Taste of Power. That'll kick off in Gea Kul in the seasonal realm and give you "a sampling of the carnage you'll experience while playing as the Butcher." You can also activate the transformation through Helltide events, PvP battles in the Fields of Hatred, or the new Slaughterhouse dungeon.
The bigger mechanical shift, though, is the return of killstreaks. The Season of Slaughter is also bringing back killstreaks from Diablo 3. As killing things in rapid succession seems to be the prevailing theme of this new season, it seems fitting that Blizzard is also implementing a new killstreak feature in Diablo 4 for the first time. Killstreaks will be broken down into five tiers: Killstreak, Carnage, Devastation, Bloodbath, and Massacre, with the chance to earn experience and seasonal reputation based on how many enemies are slain in a killstreak. This changes how you approach every activity in the game, rewarding momentum and speed over cautious play.
Blizzard describes this season as experimental and intentionally focused. Diablo 4 Season 12 will be a bit shorter than a typical season, lasting less than two months. Blizzard previously stated it is "designed as a more focused, streamlined" season as the team prepares for the launch of Diablo 4's second expansion, Lord of Hatred, on 28 April.
For those on the fence about the expansion, For players who haven't pre-purchased Lord of Hatred, play as the Paladin for free up to Level 25 and experience the righteous might of Sanctuary's holy warrior. The Season of Slaughter begins on 11 March and will kick off with a week-long event where you can play a paladin for free without having Lord of Hatred pre-ordered. The trial runs until 18 March across Battle.net, PlayStation, and Xbox.
When Lord of Hatred arrives in April, expect substantial changes. The expansion will introduce yet another new class, the heavy-metal inspired Warlock, to Diablo 4's roster, joining the Paladin as Lord of Hatred's second new class. This is one of the most comprehensive gameplay evolutions for Diablo IV since launch. All eight classes are getting major Skill Tree reworks, including new Skill variants for every class and a new level cap.
The Season of Slaughter feels like Blizzard testing ground before the big expansion. These experimental mechanics, the focus on rapid-fire kills, and the unusual decision to let players become the antagonist suggest the studio is tinkering with what works before committing to larger changes. Whether these ideas stick around or disappear after the season ends, it's clear Blizzard is building momentum toward something more ambitious in April.
