Arrowhead Studios releases staggering second-year statistics for its hit co-op shooter, and the numbers are almost too big to comprehend.

  • More than 8.6 billion Helldivers died in the game's second year, with 177 million of those deaths caused by friendly fire.
  • Players killed nearly 280 billion enemies across all three factions, with the Terminids accounting for 121 billion of those kills.
  • The Eagle Strafing Run was the top friendly-fire offender, responsible for 34 million teammate deaths on its own.
  • An official Helldivers 2 film starring Jason Momoa is confirmed for a 2027 release.

If there is one thing Helldivers 2 players have proven beyond doubt in the game's second year, it is that defending democracy is expensive. A new infographic released by developer Arrowhead Game Studios reveals a set of statistics so large they strain credibility: more than 8.6 billion Helldivers lost their lives over the course of the year, and 177 million of those deaths were inflicted not by alien foes, but by fellow players.

The full picture of the Second Galactic War is considerably grimmer for Super Earth's enemies. According to the infographic shared by Arrowhead, players eliminated close to 280 billion enemies across the game's three factions. The bug-like Terminids bore the heaviest losses, with 121 billion killed over the twelve-month period. In return, the Terminids claimed 2.8 billion Helldiver lives, making them by far the most lethal faction the playerbase faced.

Helldivers 2 squads of four must coordinate carefully to avoid the friendly-fire incidents that claimed 177 million lives in Year Two.

The stratagem data is where things get genuinely interesting. Reinforce, Eagle 500KG Bomb, and Resupply topped the usage charts, which reflects how the game is actually played: Reinforce brings back dead squadmates, and Resupply is called in almost constantly to keep ammunition and medical stims flowing. Sentry turrets also feature prominently, alongside the Eagle Airstrike and Eagle Strafing Run.

The Eagle Strafing Run earns a less flattering distinction as the single worst friendly-fire offender, responsible for 34 million of those 177 million teammate deaths. The Portable Hellbomb follows with 23 million, while the K-9 unit accounted for 21 million friendly kills. The Guard Dog and Anti-Personnel Minefield round out the top five, with 9.3 million and 6.8 million incidents respectively. For players who have ever had a Guard Dog rover spin around and open fire on them mid-fight, none of this will come as a surprise.

The game's vast array of stratagems gives players enormous firepower, but that power comes with obvious risks to squadmates.

The data release comes at a notable moment in the game's ongoing narrative. Players recently lost the battle for Cyberstan, the Automaton homeworld, after a drawn-out campaign that exhausted available reinforcements. Because much of the Cyberstan conflict took place after the two-year anniversary period captured by this infographic, the full casualty toll from that engagement will likely not be reflected until next year's data release, giving the community something to anticipate alongside the evolving story.

Helldivers 2 continues to demonstrate that a game built around intentional friendly fire, enormous explosions, and chaotic co-operation can sustain a genuinely engaged player community well into its second year. With an official film starring Jason Momoa confirmed for 2027, the franchise shows no sign of retreating from the cultural territory it has claimed.
