After months of anticipation, Digital Extremes has locked in 25 March 2026 as the date Warframe arrives on Nintendo Switch 2. The free-to-play sci-fi shooter, which has accumulated a substantial player base over its thirteen years on the market, will launch alongside the platform's technical capabilities rather than as an afterthought port.

According to Eurogamer, Digital Extremes CEO Steve Sinclair had flagged the Switch 2 ambitions back in July last year, describing the team's eagerness to push the hardware to its limits. The holdup at the time was straightforward: the studio was still waiting on a dev kit from Nintendo. Eight months later, that patience appears to have paid off.

What the hardware upgrade actually delivers

The Switch 2 version targets 60fps and 1080p resolution in both handheld and docked modes, with improved load times, textures, and shader quality. That is a meaningful step up for a game that previously ran on the original Switch with considerable compromises. The Switch 2 version also includes DLSS support and mouse controls via the right Joy-Con. In practice, that means players can flip the Joy-Con face-down and use it like a mouse for menu navigation and precision aiming, a feature that suits a loot-heavy game where inventory management is half the battle.

For players who log into the Switch 2 version between launch and 15 April, Digital Extremes is offering the Ambimanus Pack for free, which includes the Vericres Warfan, Akomeogi Warfan Skin, Slicing Feathers Mod, 3-Day Affinity Booster, 3-Day Credit Booster, Broadsword Past/Future Sigil, and a Buddies in Gaming Glyph.

The Shadowgrapher: more than a launch wrapper

The Switch 2 debut is not happening in isolation. As part of Warframe's 13th anniversary celebration, The Shadowgrapher lands on all platforms on Wednesday, 25 March. It arrives as a standalone update, breaking from the game's traditional "Echoes" cadence.

The headline addition is Follie, the game's 64th Warframe, who comes to the battlefield with a unique and powerful ink-based arsenal of abilities. She can enter an ink canvas and, upon leaving it, use the ink to debuff enemies, and players can customise a sketchbook before battle to gain a tactical advantage.

The more intriguing new addition for genre fans is Follie's Hunt. It is Warframe's take on the 4v1 asymmetric multiplayer survival horror match type, popularised by Dead by Daylight. The mode pits four players against Follie, who stalks and reacts to the allied team's actions, while players must complete unfinished paintings scattered around the ruins of the Vesper Relay by seeking out pools of coloured ink and transferring it to canvases. Follie gains shorter ability cooldowns as each canvas is completed, becoming more aggressive as the match progresses. Each run also comes with randomised modifiers, which should keep the experience from going stale quickly.

Clan features and a limited-time event

The Shadowgrapher also brings a suite of quality-of-life improvements for organised players. Clan-centric gameplay is getting significant attention, with a percentage of resources farmed from missions now sent to a shared Clan Vault, progressing a weekly Initiative metre visible on the Clan panel. Matchmaking has been updated to automatically prioritise friends and clanmates when pairing players, if any are available.

A limited-time event, Operation: Atramentum, runs from 2 to 23 April and centres on the Follie's Hunt mode. It includes new cosmetic rewards as well as items carried over from past Operations, giving long-term players a reason to return.

TennoCon 2026 tickets are live

TennoCon, the annual celebration of all things Warframe and Soulframe, returns to Digital Extremes' hometown of London, Ontario, on 10-11 July 2026. Tickets are available now via Eventbrite. All tickets include access to the TennoCon 2026 Digital Pack, which comes with in-game cosmetics, emotes, skins, and 475 Platinum currency.

For Switch 2 owners who have been watching the platform's games catalogue fill out gradually since launch, Warframe's arrival is a solid addition. It is a genuinely deep game with over a decade of content behind it, and the hardware improvements suggest Digital Extremes has treated this as a proper native port rather than a compatibility patch. The real question is whether the notorious complexity of Warframe's progression systems will deter new players arriving via the Switch 2. The studio has been iterating on its new-player experience for years, but it remains one of gaming's steeper learning curves. That caveat aside, 25 March looks like a legitimate moment for the platform.
