Look, if you've spent any time with a PlayStation controller over the past two decades, you already know what God of War means to people. It's one of Sony's most beloved franchises, a saga that started with a rage-fuelled Spartan slaughtering Greek gods and eventually evolved into something far more layered: a story about fatherhood, grief, and what it costs to become something better than you were. Prime Video is now betting big that those themes can carry a live-action television series, and based on the cast being assembled, it's a bet worth watching.
Production has begun on the new Prime Video series, with Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios sharing a first-look image of stars Ryan Hurst and Callum Vinson in the roles of Kratos and Atreus. The series is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions, and has received a two-season order. No release date has been confirmed.

Sons of Anarchy actor Ryan Hurst landed the leading role of Kratos. The actor, who also starred in Remember the Titans, said he feels grateful to have the part, adding that he used to play the games and now he gets to be Kratos. There's a pleasing symmetry there: Hurst previously played Thor in PlayStation's God of War Ragnarok video game, earning a BAFTA Award nomination for his performance. He knows this world well.
Joining Hurst is young actor Callum Vinson as Atreus, the son whose relationship with his father sits at the heart of the story. The series follows Kratos and ten-year-old Atreus as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human. That tension is the engine of the games, and it's the right premise to build a TV series around.
The supporting cast is where things get genuinely exciting. Acting legend Mandy Patinkin, whose career in entertainment has spanned decades, will play Odin on the God of War TV show. Patinkin began his career as a theatre actor and earned multiple Tony Award nominations. He's also known for his starring role as Saul Berenson on Homeland. To others, he's best known as Inigo Montoya from The Princess Bride. Casting Patinkin as the All-Father is the kind of move that makes a franchise feel serious.

There's a strong Australian flavour to the cast as well. Adelaide-born Teresa Palmer has been cast in the series. She will play Phoebe/Sif, Thor's wife and the goddess of family. Palmer is known for her leading role as Diana Bishop on the Sky fantasy drama series A Discovery of Witches and as Freya Heywood on the Disney+ psychological thriller miniseries The Clearing, which earned her an AACTA Award nomination. Joining her is Australian actor Ben Chapple, who takes on the recurring role of Magni, the eldest son of Sif and Thor. Local talent representing well on the world stage.
Ólafur Darri Ólafsson will play Thor, the God of Thunder, on the God of War TV show. Fans of the games might find that an interesting swap: Hurst previously played Thor in the video game, and now he's moved across to the role of Kratos while Ólafsson takes up the hammer. Ed Skrein, known for Deadpool and Jurassic World: Rebirth, plays Baldur, the impervious and volatile youngest son of Odin. The broader cast also includes Max Parker as Heimdall, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, and Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka as brothers Brok and Sindri.
One detail worth highlighting: Alastair Duncan played Mimir in God of War and God of War Ragnarok, and he's coming back to play the same role on the TV show, making him the first actor from the games to reprise their role on screen. It's a small touch, but one that will matter enormously to the fan community.
Behind the camera, the show is in capable hands. Ronald D. Moore, creator of Battlestar Galactica and Outlander, serves as showrunner, executive producer, and writer. The show was originally greenlit back in 2022, but original showrunner Rafe Judkins exited in October 2024, with Moore joining not long after. Emmy Award-winning director Frederick E.O. Toye, whose credits include Shogun, The Boys, and Fallout, has signed on to direct the series' first two episodes.
The God of War franchise sits among PlayStation's most commercially and critically successful properties, and the pressure to get this right is real. Prime Video's series is the first time God of War makes the jump to live-action, and it follows the success of the streamer's other video game show Fallout. That success sets a high bar, but it also proves the audience is there for thoughtful adaptations of gaming's biggest stories. At the end of the day, the raw material is exceptional and the team assembling around it looks the part. Whether it sticks the landing is a question for whenever that release date arrives.
