Royal Randwick stages a ten-race card this Saturday, and with track conditions shaping as a genuine factor across several races, punters will need to weigh form carefully against the going. Here is a full race-by-race guide, as compiled by Ray Hickson for the Sydney Morning Herald, with selections and reasoning for each event.
Race 1: 12:30pm Midway Handicap (1100m)
Flightcrew is the each-way play in the opener. She goes well on good tracks and any additional give in the ground should suit her even more. She was unlucky to be ambushed by Big Red Tequila at Warwick Farm earlier in the month, and returning to Midway level gives her every chance. Let's Go Again is consistent and ran fourth at Warwick Farm before a solid effort back at 1000m. Bryant gets the blinkers on for the first time along with a handy weight drop, and Zaragoza is reliable without being a frequent winner. Selection: Flightcrew each-way.
Race 2: 1:05pm TAB Highway Handicap (1000m)
Brave Xena was impressive in both starts with sting out of the ground and steps straight up from an easy Class 1 win at Nowra last weekend. She has drawn well and gets in light. The question is simply whether backing up so quickly is too much to ask. Satin Stiletto has drawn barrier seven, a genuine improvement on recent outings, and her three runs in Class 3 company at Randwick over 1200m show she can handle the track. Sir Franklin won three straight on soft tracks during winter and looked sharp in his latest trial. Neil was a Highway winner on a heavy track in August and should improve on his first-up effort at Doomben. Selection: Brave Xena win.
Race 3: 1:40pm Asahi Super Dry Handicap (2000m)
Bear On The Loose led over a mile first-up and boxed away for third, suggesting he has returned in good order. The 2000m with give in the track suits him well, and despite carrying big weight he drops significantly in class. Mr Monaco is worth watching in the market after winning over 2400m at Caulfield in October. Unlimited was positioned well last time but lacked the sprint behind Sun God after previous wins over this course and trip. Don Diego De Vega is an each-way chance fresh at this distance, particularly if rain continues to fall. Selection: Bear On The Loose win.
Race 4: 2:15pm Sintoro Sweet Embrace Stakes (1200m)
Hardanger has done nothing wrong across two starts, finishing third on debut behind Warwoven and then finding the line nicely in the Widden from a tricky gate. A handier draw and the step to 1200m look to be in her favour. Pembrey was dominant on debut at Eagle Farm, leading throughout on a wet track, and James McDonald takes the ride, which is always a reason to pay attention. Spicy Miss was runner-up three weeks ago in the Lonhro and remains a serious contender, while Ciaron's Star impressed in the Pierro two weeks ago and will relish the extra distance. Selection: Hardanger each-way.
Race 5: 2:50pm Catanach's Jewellers Skyline Stakes (1200m)
Warwoven is the Golden Slipper favourite and returns here after a dominant display in early January. He has drawn gate one and while he goes into this without public trials, his record suggests he does not need them. High Alert brings solid Victorian form, having run fourth to Alibaba and performed well against Closer To Free and Stretan Ruler. Fireball is unbeaten in two starts including the Inglis Millennium, though a tricky draw is the concern. Central Europe debuts on Tuesday trial form and features in Slipper markets, so he warrants a watch. Selection: Warwoven win.
Race 6: 3:25pm Proven Thoroughbreds Guy Walter Stakes (1400m)
Verona Rose was hard to miss steaming home into third in the Triscay two weeks ago on resumption. The 1400m looks ideal and a soft track would not worry her. She simply needs the right run and race shape. Firestorm is always a threat fresh, having run third in the Golden Pendant at this trip when resuming in the spring. Manaal held on for second in the Triscay and the weights shift slightly in her favour this time. Dark Glitter backs up after placing in both the Triscay and the Millie Fox last week and will be charging home late. Selection: Verona Rose win.
Race 7: 4:00pm The Chase Surround Stakes (1400m)
Tempted is the standout runner in this race after her first-up demolition of the boys in the Eskimo Prince three weeks ago. The gap between runs was deliberate and has her primed for the step to 1400m. She was beaten at this trip second-up in the spring during the Golden Rose, but that defeat came against what was described as a freakish performance. Back against fillies from a good draw, she looks the clear favourite for good reason.

Apocalyptic ran solid second in the Light Fingers on resumption and draws to take control of proceedings this time. Savvy Hallie led all the way in that same race and will again look to dictate. Ole Dancer, who defeated Apocalyptic in the Thousand Guineas in the spring, ran into second fresh at Flemington and is worth considering. Selection: Tempted win.
Race 8: 4:40pm TAB Verry Elleegant Stakes (1600m)
Autumn Glow arrives at this race with a perfect nine-from-nine record and comes off a dominant first-up win in the Apollo two weeks ago. She has already won on a very wet track, which removes the main potential concern about deteriorating conditions. Getting to ten from ten is the straightforward expectation, even if racing never offers guarantees.

Aeliana should appreciate the step to a mile, particularly with give in the track, and could run into a place. Sir Delius is the wild card: he was narrowly beaten by Lindermann in the Chelmsford at this track and trip in the spring, then claimed impressive scalps in the Underwood and Turnbull. Three trials have him ready. Lindermann ran an honest race last time and will do so again if conditions are not too wet. Ceolwulf is dangerous in the wet but is still racing without blinkers. Selection: Autumn Glow win.
Race 9: 5:15pm HKJC World Pool Liverpool City Cup (1300m)
Media World has trialled well and looks set to land in a favourable position from his draw, with a designated on-pacer drawn alongside him. Track conditions are unlikely to concern him. Axius caused a notable upset when winning the Magic Millions Sprint at big odds a month ago and remains lightly weighted and versatile. Willaidow got the job done first-up in the JRA Plate at Rosehill and will put himself in the firing line from the outset. The Instructor was narrowly beaten by Willaidow and then ran fourth behind Autumn Glow in the Apollo under unsuitable weight-for-age conditions. Selection: Media World each-way.
Race 10: 5:55pm United Resource Management Handicap (1200m)
